With the completion of a second round of energy-efficiency improvements, the University of Central Oklahoma was awarded another rebate check during a presentation on its campus on Aug. 25.
Representatives from the City of Edmond and its power supplier, the Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority, presented a check for $85,705 to the university. This was Phase 2 of a campus lighting improvement project. A previous check of $64,825 was presented to the university in April.
The rebates are part of the Demand and Energy Efficiency Program (DEEP), administered by OMPA. The university is eligible for the program because it is a customer of Edmond Electric.
For this project, a series of lighting fixtures were upgraded to high-efficiency LED lighting that are expected to reduce the university’s energy demand by 427.23 kilowatts. The previous phase had a reduction of 348 kilowatts.
DEEP assists OMPA’s 42 members with their qualified customers to reduce electric service energy demand and costs. The program provides rebates to commercial and industrial customers – including schools and government buildings – that implement retrofits that reduce their demand at peak times. Projects include changing out lighting, HVAC, refrigeration, commercial food service equipment, pumps and motors for more energy-efficient equipment.
These energy improvements help OMPA delay the time in which it needs to add expensive generation capacity.
So far for 2017, the 48 projects awarded DEEP rebates have a combined expected demand reduction of 2,754 kilowatts.
