OMPA TO ASSIST CITY OF WYNNEWOOD WITH UPGRADE TO SUBSTATION
In a special meeting on January 7th, the Wynnewood City Council Members met with representatives from the Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority (OMPA), David W. Osburn, General Manager, Jim McAvoy, PE, Manager of Engineering Services, and Drake N. Rice, Director of Member Services, to discuss upgrades to the OMPA owned substation and an amendment to the OMPA power supply contract. The Authority is the wholesale power supplier to the City of Wynnewood.
As McAvoy explained, “OMPA proactively monitors the condition of its substations along with assistance from the member cities. At the present time, there is no spare transformer available that would fit in the existing Wynnewood substation. OMPA wants to ensure service if the existing transformer had a failure.”
OMPA has purchased a second transformer for the Wynnewood substation at a cost of $195,000 and it is scheduled for delivery in January. The Authority will hire a crane service, an electrical substation contractor and a testing service to handle the installation of the second transformer and perform additional substation upgrades at a total cost of $350,000. Substation upgrades, including connecting the second transformer, are to be completed by the fall of 2014 with additional equipment and design work needing to be completed first.
OMPA General Manager David W. Osburn will be discussing the amendment to the OMPA contract that OMPA is asking the city to consider. All the other 38 member cities have now adopted the amendment.
The Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority (OMPA) is a wholesale power company owned by 39 municipal electric utilities, including Wynnewood City Utilities Authority. OMPA provides economies of scale in power generation and related services to support community-owned electric utilities. The members of OMPA serve approximately two-hundred and fifty-thousand Oklahomans.
