Laverne Public Works Authority Certified in CUP Program
During the City of Laverne’s City Council meeting on July 7, Mayor Susan Davis was presented with a $20,000 check by Drake Rice, OMPA Director of Member Services, on behalf of the Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority’s (OMPA) Board of Directors, certifying Laverne Public Works Authority as a Competitive Utility.
This is a re-certification that began on June 1, and will last for two years. Laverne was originally certified on Feb. 1, 2004.
OMPA’s Competitive Utility Program (CUP) is a voluntary program, started in 1995, that provides the 39 member cities with a way to evaluate and improve the operation of their electric utilities, and make them better able to compete in the electric utility industry. This program provides two types of reward – recognition in the form of certification, and financial rewards, which includes the check for $20,000.
“For the citizens of Laverne, CUP certification means that your community-owned electric utility is committed to excellence in its operation and delivery of safe, reliable and competitively priced electricity,” said Town Treasurer Patty Witchey, who oversaw Laverne’s CUP program. “The Laverne Public Works Authority is here to be of service and help to all of its consumers.”
The Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority (OMPA) is a wholesale power company owned by 39 municipal electric utilities. OMPA provides economies of scale in power generation and related services to support community-owned electric utilities. The members of OMPA serve approximately two-hundred and fifty-thousand Oklahomans.
