Granite Re-Certified in CUP Program
During the Town of Granite’s Town Board meeting on July 12, Mayor Tony Scarborough was presented with a $20,000 check by Drake Rice, OMPA Director of Member Services, on behalf of the Oklahoma Municipal Power Authority’s (OMPA) Board of Directors, in recognition of the re-certification of the town in the CUP program.
OMPA’s Competitive Utility Program (CUP) is a voluntary program, started in 1995, that provides the 37 member cities with a way to evaluate and improve the operation of their electric utilities. This program provides two types of reward – recognition in the form of certification, along with a check for $20,000,
and financial rewards in the form of reductions in the city’s wholesale electric costs.
“For the citizens of Granite, continued certification in CUP means that your community owned electric utility is committed to excellence in its operation and delivery of safe, reliable and low-cost electricity. Granite’s Electric Department is here to be of service and help to all of its consumers,” said John Jackson, Utility Director. Granite was first certified as a Competitive Utility on July 1, 2004.
The Authority is an organization that was created by Granite and other towns and cities that own and operate their municipal electric systems back in 1981. After experiencing several years of wholesale power cost increases, 26 municipal electric systems, including Granite’s Electric Department, banded together to aggregate their power supply needs, and the Oklahoma legislature authorized the formation of OMPA. The Authority now serves 37 municipally-owned electric systems in Oklahoma.
