Goltry Town Clerk Recognized for Outstanding Career
Municipal Electric Systems of Oklahoma is the statewide trade association for over 100 communities who own and operate municipal electric or natural gas distribution systems. The association annually recognizes one of their members for outstanding contribution to his or her community, and this year is proud to announce its Meritorious Service Award goes to Mary Page, Town Clerk for the Town of Goltry.
In the words of her children, Mary is a perfect storm of heart and passion for town. Mary was wife, mother of four, head cook at the local school, and part-time employee at city hall when, in 1972, she was elected Town Clerk. Forty years later, she is still holding that position as well as the position of Town Treasurer. One of the great difficulties for small-town America is having competent administration and accounting. Mary Page has given Goltry both of these. But aside from insuring that the park is mowed, the potholes are filled, the bills are mailed, and the deposits accounted, Mary is at the center of and the creator of town activity.
She has been Citizen of the year for Goltry, for Alfalfa County, for KanOkla Telephone Cooperative. She is church board member, senior citizen meal deliverer, coordinator of flag displays for Memorial Day and Veteran’s Day then cleans up the cemetery after the ceremonies. She makes ice cream for the Fourth of July picnic.
According to every person we spoke to in Goltry, Mary never seems to sleep. She takes the calls for outages, for water breaks, for any complaints; she is looking out for the elderly, attending school functions, setting up tables for community meetings, and every business day, she’s there at city hall to file the reports, apply for grants, keep the books.
Said Stillwater Assistant City Manager and MESO Board President Dan Blankenship in presenting the award, “Her children were right, we’re convinced. Mary Page is an amazing woman and the recipient of the Marvin Hicks-Al Middleton Meritorious Service Award for 2012.”
The award was given at the Annual Meeting of the Municipal Electric Systems of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the Oklahoma Municipal League.
